I had such hope. I really did. When the vaccines came out earlier this year I felt the first inkling of hope. When I finally got my vaccine appointments in April I started gleefully looking at possible trips online. By May I had rebooked the South Africa trip I had to cancel last year and even added on a couple days at Victoria Falls. By June restrictions were being lifted masks were starting to come off we were talking back to office in September and I booked a trip to Belgium for Christmas. Then came the Delta variant.
I was supposed to leave for Cape Town in less than a month. I delayed canceling the trip as long as possible but thh he the vaccination rate in South Africa is about 2 percent. With covid tests required before entry in a country and before going home , almost no one at the hotels or restaurants vaccinated and no real statistics on the rate of breakthrough infections yet , I decided to cancel. I just didn’t want to test positive and have to be quarantined. Better to wait .The tour provider cancelled it anyway a couple weeks later.
